“1984” is a dystopian novel by George Orwell, published in 1949. It is set in a society where the government has complete control over the lives of its citizens and where critical thought and free expression are suppressed. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party, which controls the country through propaganda, surveillance, and censorship. Despite his loyalty to the Party, Winston becomes disillusioned with the regime and begins secretly rebelling against it. He joins an underground resistance movement and falls in love with a fellow rebel, Julia. Will the rebellion win and Winston and Julia’s love prevail? Read the book to find out.

There are several ways in which the novel “1984” can be compared and contrasted with modern day times:

  • Control of information and censorship: In “1984,” the Party controlled all information and manipulated the truth to maintain its power. Similarly, in modern times, there are concerns about government censorship and the manipulation of information, particularly through social media and online platforms.

  • Surveillance: In “1984,” the Party used telescreens to monitor the actions and thoughts of its citizens. In modern times, there are similar concerns about the use of surveillance technology by governments and companies to track and monitor individuals.

  • Propaganda: In “1984,” the Party used propaganda to control the thoughts and beliefs of the population. In modern times, there are concerns about the use of propaganda and manipulation of public opinion through media and political campaigns.

  • Totalitarianism: In “1984,” the Party had complete control over every aspect of society and individuals had no freedom or autonomy. While most modern societies are not overtly totalitarian, there are still concerns about the extent of government control and the erosion of civil liberties in some contexts.

  • Resistance and rebellion: In “1984,” Winston and Julia resist the Party and join an underground resistance movement. In modern times, there are many examples of individuals and groups resisting and challenging oppressive systems and governments through peaceful protests, civil disobedience, and other forms of activism.
